Michelangelo's Taint on History
A new study says that the subjects and figures depicted in Michelangelo Buonarroti's "Last Judgment" are the results of multiple trips to public bath houses of the day which doubled as brothels. The brief reasoning behind the theory is outlined in an article on guardian.co.uk, but is not necessarily convincing. However it lines up with the working method for other famed artists across history. Think Manet's "Olympia."

Though Not Perceived by Most, "Economic Recovery" is Apparent in the Art Market
While most Americans continue struggling to make ends meet the world's wealthiest had a nice time shopping at Sotheby's annual Contemporary Art Auction evening sale. ARTINFO Write-Up on V magazine's MOVE @ PS1
Last week I posted the promotional video for a group of collaborative works from fashion designers and artists to be hosted by PS1 in Long Island City, and sponsored by V Magazine. It was a two day event spanning the past weekend and included fashion and art heavy hitters like Rodarte, Proenza Schouler, Marc Jacobs, Dan Colen, Rob Pruitt, and Ryan Trecartin. Check out the write-up on ARTINFO. Sounds like an art/fashion funhouse.

Come for the Erwin Wurm, Stay for the Tony Oursler
Lehmann Maupin (Link)
While on Lehmann Maupin's website looking into the Erwin Wurm's show I learned that another of my favorite artists is currently showing new works at this Chelsea gallery. Video/Installation artist, Tony Oursler's most recent compositions are groundbreaking, embracing a "miniatures" scale. Oursler stays true to trademark form however, incorporating projections into these new pieces. Wurm and Oursler together now you know you're in trouble.
Be sure to check out the featured Oursler video package from the reception as it provides a better sense of the work than the photos do.
If you can't get enough Erwin Wurm ARTINFO and Museo both have interviews on their sites (The Museo interview is older and a little long but it is accompanied by some great images of earlier works like "Fat House").

LOT-EK: reduce, re-use, re-configure
LOT-EK @ Postopolis (Link)
I have always wanted a home composed of industrial materials and modernist design elements. In this presentation at Postopolis ca. 2007 the collaborative design team LOT-EK, discussed their version of a low cost, a cookie-cutter type residential structure and commercial space constructions, both derived from recycled shipping containers. Check out their slick website below.

Orly Genger: Rope-a-Dope
Museo Magazine: Orly Genger (Link)
The first time I experienced Orly Genger's work was in the atrium of the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 2008. Her sculptures are essentially enormous rope weavings that tend to define the space they occupy. Needless to say I was intrigued by their textural quality, simplicity of technique, and scale. I recently came across her work again in a bi-monthly art periodical and went on an internet search for more interviews, pictures, and reviews. This rope is dope.
